For laptop

Teleprompter for laptop: the Mac app, or free in your browser

On a Mac, use OwlPrompter for Mac (macOS 15 or later): the same app as on iPhone and iPad, with a floating prompter window that stays on top of other apps, just under the camera. On a Windows PC or Chromebook there is no app to install: the free prompter below runs in the browser, so paste your script, pick a speed and read, or tick Record with camera to film yourself with the webcam.

On a Mac

OwlPrompter for Mac

Write and keep your scripts, read from the prompter and record with your Mac’s camera. The floating prompter window stays on top while you work in another app — a call, a slide deck, a screen recording — sitting just under the camera so your eyes stay near the lens. One purchase covers iPhone, iPad and Mac on the same Apple Account.

On Windows or a Chromebook? The free browser prompter below works there too.

Paste a script to see how long it takes to read.

Space: play / pause · R: record · ↑ ↓: speed · Home: top · Esc: exit. Tap the text to pause. Works in landscape on a phone, too.

Words in [square brackets] show faintly and are never scored — use them for stage cues. Need a starting point? Try a script template, or check the length with the speech timer.

Keep the words under the camera

A laptop webcam sits in the middle of the top edge, so the closer the line you read is to that edge, the more it looks like you are looking at the viewer.

  • Set Reading line to 15–20%, so the active line sits just under the lens. On a MacBook with a notch, that is right below it.
  • Raise Margin to 20% or more: a narrower column keeps your eyes from sweeping left and right.
  • Sit an arm’s length back and pick the smallest text size you can read comfortably from there.
  • Prop the laptop up so the camera is at eye level rather than looking up at you.

Record yourself with the built-in camera

  1. Tick Record with camera, then press Start

Your browser asks for the camera and microphone once. The preview fills the prompter behind your script.

  2. Press ● Record, or R

A 3-second countdown, then the script starts from the top and the recording begins together. Play on its own rehearses without recording.

  3. Press ■ Stop, then Save video

Watch the take right there. Save video downloads it: MP4 in Chrome and Safari, WebM in Firefox. Record again replaces it.

Keyboard: Space plays and pauses, R records, ↑ ↓ change the speed, Home goes back to the top, Esc leaves the prompter.

Filters previewed live on the camera and composited into the recording

Filming on your phone instead?

OwlPrompter records with filters for free on iPhone, iPad and Android, with no watermark. With Pro it follows your voice and burns captions into the video.

Questions

Is there a teleprompter app for Mac or Windows?

For Mac, yes: OwlPrompter for Mac runs on macOS 15 or later and adds a floating prompter window that stays on top of other apps, just under the camera. There is no Windows or Chromebook app; on those, use the free browser prompter on this page, with nothing to install.

Where does the recording go?

Nowhere until you press Save video. Then your browser saves it like any other download, usually to the Downloads folder. It is never uploaded.

Does it work on a MacBook with a notch?

Yes. The camera sits in the notch, so set Reading line to about 15–20%: the line you are reading then sits just below the lens. In OwlPrompter for Mac, the floating prompter window sits just under the camera on its own.

Does it work offline?

The page needs a connection to load. After that, scrolling and recording run in your browser; only the optional Score my read uses your browser’s online speech service.

Everything the Mac app does is on the teleprompter for Mac page. On a call? See the teleprompter for Zoom setup. Writing the script? Start from a script template and time it with the speech timer. Recording a screen walkthrough? See how to use a teleprompter with Loom.
