How to use a teleprompter with Loom

Loom does not have a scrolling teleprompter; a request for one is still open on Atlassian’s issue tracker. It does have speaker notes in the Loom desktop app, which stay on screen while you record and never appear in the video. For a list of points, use those. For a full script, run a prompter in its own window right under your webcam and record in Camera Only mode, or capture just the window you are presenting, so the prompter stays out of the recording.

Recording a talking-head update on your phone instead? OwlPrompter records from the prompter screen for free, and with Pro the script follows your voice.

When Loom’s speaker notes are enough

Loom’s help center describes speaker notes as a place for bullet points or a full script that is visible only while you record and does not appear in the video. They are available only in the Loom desktop app, on macOS 13 or later and Windows 10 or later, and are limited to 10,000 characters. They show on the monitor you are recording, you can move and resize them, and they are saved for your next recording.

The article does not describe the notes scrolling on their own, so treat them as a reference you glance at rather than a prompter you read from. For a handful of talking points, that is exactly right.

  1. Open speaker notes

In the Loom desktop app, select Speaker notes. A window opens for your notes.

  2. Write, then place them

Type or paste your points, then drag and resize the notes window so it sits as close under your camera as possible.

  3. Record

Start your recording. The notes stay visible to you and are not captured in the video.

Reading a full script: a prompter under the webcam

  1. Open the prompter in its own window

Open the online teleprompter in a separate browser window and paste your script.

  2. Set it up small and high

Untick Fullscreen, set the reading line near the top, and make the window a short, wide strip at the top-middle of the screen, just under the webcam. The teleprompter for laptop page covers placement, including MacBooks with a notch.

  3. Start the prompter, then Loom

Press Start prompter, pause it with Space, start your Loom recording, and press Space again when you begin to speak.

Keep the prompter out of the recording

Loom’s capture modes decide what ends up in the video, so they decide whether your script does.

  • Camera Only records just you, so a prompter window on your screen never appears. This is the simplest choice for a talking-head message.
  • Screen and Camera with Window capture records only the window you choose. Pick the app you are demonstrating, and keep the prompter in a different window.
  • In the Loom Chrome extension, Current Tab captures a single browser tab, so a prompter in a separate browser window stays out.
  • Full Screen captures everything on the screen you record, including a prompter window. Avoid it when reading, or put the prompter on a monitor you are not recording.

Write for a short async video

  • Keep it short. At a normal pace of about 140 words per minute, a two-minute Loom is roughly 280 words; the speech timer checks any draft.
  • Say the point in the first sentence. People watching an async update decide in seconds whether to keep going.
  • Script the opening and the ask in full, and use bullet points for the walkthrough in between, where you react to what is on screen.
  • Talk to one person. Write “you” rather than “everyone”, and it will sound like a message instead of an announcement.
